This week we're shining the Celebrate Local family spotlight on the Vanessa Bauman, owner of paisleyPROPOSAL!

Vanessa will be hosting a pop-up shop at our Easton store this Saturday, November 5 from 1-4pm (until supplies last) handlettering custom craft pumpkins! You pick the pumpkin, the color ink, AND the phrase you want her to write!

What's the story behind your business, and how did you get started?

I have a background in architecture & business, and just want to design all the things! After executing our completely DIY wedding, I was encouraged by family and friends to start selling my work. During a particular emotionally difficult time in our family soon after that, I needed another creative outlet as a form of therapy... so I took the leap and started paisleyPROPOSAL. I began by concentrating on custom stationery- primarily watercolored and handlettered wedding suites and event invitations. Eventually my full-time job became more demanding and I was traveling more often, which meant that I couldn't devote the necessary time to custom work. I had a concept in my head for awhile, and decided to launch paisleyPINTS by paisleyPROPOSAL last winter just before Black Friday. (I know, what was I thinking?!) I sold out within a few weeks, the holidays came and went, then work and life took over again... and I thought, "oh, that was fun while it lasted." This last summer, I joined an Instagram challenge that completely inspired me to pick up my watercolors and my pens again. I knew this time around I wanted to take my time, strategize, and re-evaluate my sourcing vendors. I knew I wanted to source locally as much as possible, and I wanted to incorporate professional packaging. It was a dream to be in retail stores at that point, but I had to take things one step at a time.

What makes your products unique?

My hand lettering is of course what makes each product unique. I also love that by professionally printing the glasses, it means they are dishwasher safe. (Dishes are one of my least favorite chores!) Each hand stamped pouch also makes them perfect for gifting- a customer can just give it as it is!

What do you like about being part of the Celebrate Local family?

I was incredibly intimidated by the thought of getting into retail stores, but I love how warm and welcoming everyone at Celebrate Local has been. They have distinct processes that are in place to benefit everyone involved, and I know they truly care about their vendors. I'm incredibly honored to be among such talent, and may have teared up a little seeing my products officially on the Celebrate Local shelves.
