A great way to show off the city or state you love is to display a gorgeous map depicting it in detail. This week we're speaking to Dan Linden, owner of Cut Maps about his hand-illustrated 3-D works of cartographic art.
What's the story behind your business, and how did you get started?
Cut Maps started when back in 2012. I am a toy designer by trade, but had access to a laser cutter at my job. I wanted to make something really 'Columbus-y' on the laser, so I sat and hand-traced a map of Columbus in Adobe Illustrator. It took me 20 hours to do! I showed some pictures to some people on a Columbus forum, and they wanted to buy it from me. Within a couple weeks, my one-off Columbus map idea had turned into a business. I now do over 500 cities and sell them around the world!
What makes your products unique?
Maps have been around for thousands of years. They've always lived in the 2-D space on a piece of paper. I took them off the page into three dimensions. There's also something so familiar about a map that really tugs on the heartstrings. It's a unique way to remember the places that have been important to you in your life.
What do you like about being part of the Celebrate Local family?
Cut Maps started because of my love for Columbus. Celebrate Local is a place to feature everyone's passion for Columbus and Ohio in general. There are so many talented local people whose products are housed under one roof, and I love being a part of it!
