Wendy and Letha of Bake Me Happy took what many see as a problem or curse and turned it into a business. Read on to learn how they're bringing their childhood favorites to the GF game.
Q: What's the story behind your business, and how did you get started?
A: We started our business out of necessity, really. I figured out about 10 years ago that I needed to go gluten free and there were not many options out there that tasted good and/or were readily available. I started baking at home for friends and everyone loved them - especially since I was doing super fun and unique things like gluten free Twinkies (now called a Spongie) and spicy peanut butter cookies (now called Burners).
Letha is the entrepreneur at heart, so she said "let's do it!" And we did. We started out as wholesale only, but moved into our own beautiful space in Merion Village about a year ago and now we have a walk-in retail component as well.
Q: What makes your products unique?
A: We set out to not only make delicious gluten free items, but bring them up to the next level. We aren't wanted to just replace a chocolate chip cookie, we want to make it special and comparable to a gluten filled product. We do a lot of nostalgic treats like Oatmeal Creme Pies (we call them Oatmeal Creme Clouds), Twinkies (Spongies), Moon Pies, King Dongs, Zebra Cakes, SnoBalls, PopTarts etc. because we know that people have warm feelings tied to these childhood treats. We make them gluten free and even better than the original. We also like to add in some specialty treats as well like decorated birthday cakes, cupcakes, specialty brownies and blondies, and Pies - we love PIES!
We also make delicious scones with artisan mix-ins that have quite their own following in unique flavor combinations like Maple Cream, Bacon and Cheddar or Blueberry, Goat Cheese and Basil. We sell these baked fresh in our store and also have four varieties that we sell "Take and Bake" in stores and our shop so you can take them home and bake them yourselves.
Q: What do you like about being part of the Celebrate Local family?"
A: I really like the support they give us and the feeling of family. They have invited us to some great events and connected us to some other great businesses. If I ever need anything they are quick to enthusiastically respond with help.
